European Arcade Heritage Day 2026

European Arcade Heritage Day 2026

European Arcade Heritage Day is a new European cultural initiative celebrating classic video game heritage and the historical legacy of the arcade era. Its first edition took place as a coordinated event on 27 June 2026, marking the original release date of Space Invaders in 1978.

The initiative emerged through the European Pixel League and the desire to establish an active European network of video game museums, retrogaming venues and institutions dedicated to digital preservation. MUVIC was part of this first network of confirmed participants.

A joint European initiative

Museums and cultural venues across Europe organised activities on the same day, taking a shared step towards preservation and public engagement.

Space Invaders takes centre stage

The first edition focused on one of the most influential titles in video game history and a symbol of the golden age of arcades.

Shared digital preservation

The project aims to show that preserving video game history is a collective, international and open endeavour.

Objectives

What does the initiative aim to achieve?

  • Raise awareness of classic video game heritage as part of contemporary European culture.
  • Connect museums, associations and retrogaming venues in different countries.
  • Coordinate a simultaneous cultural event around a shared historic game.
  • Promote public engagement activities accessible to everyone.
  • Strengthen digital preservation as a collective responsibility.
How venues took part

Museum activities

The proposal was flexible and adaptable to each institution. An original arcade cabinet was not required: the organisers also provided a playable PC version for demonstrations and audience challenges.

  • Historical display: show an arcade machine, a version of the game or a reference to its impact.
  • Context: briefly explain why Space Invaders marked a turning point.
  • Coordinated activity: share schedules, video greetings and a common activity across museums.
  • High-score challenge: organise a Space Invaders high-score competition.
  • Shared documentation: share photographs and videos to build a common European account of the event.

Collaboration with ARAPDIS

MUVIC's collaboration with ARAPDIS

MUVIC was pleased to welcome ARAPDIS, a community organisation in Barcelona's Gràcia neighbourhood working in rehabilitation, social inclusion and access to employment for people experiencing mental health difficulties.

During the visit, we shared video game history, but above all experiences: moments of curiosity, conversation and connection through the universal language of video games. The meeting forms part of MUVIC's work to bring the museum project closer to social and community organisations.

Video games and wellbeing

The visit encouraged memory, curiosity and conversation through original objects and shared recollections.

Accessible culture

MUVIC aims to welcome organisations, groups and individuals with diverse interests and needs.

Challenging stigma

Video games can be a cultural tool for building social connections, stimulating the mind and creating opportunities to meet.

Educational objectives

What does this collaboration offer?

  • Make the museum project an accessible and welcoming setting for cultural participation.
  • Use video game history to encourage conversation and connections between generations.
  • Support positive experiences connected with culture, memory and technology.
  • Work with organisations striving for a fairer and more inclusive society.

This experience encourages us to continue developing tailored visits and activities for social organisations, educational centres and associations interested in discovering video games as cultural heritage and a way to connect communities.

MUVIC at SAGA Barcelona Game Fest

SAGA Barcelona Game Fest

MUVIC will take part in the next SAGA Barcelona Game Fest alongside RetroBarcelona. This new event aims to bring different parts of the video game world together in one major show: the industry, the independent scene, gaming culture, family audiences and retro heritage.

The fair will take place on 9, 10 and 11 October 2026 at Fira de Barcelona Montjuïc. For MUVIC, it will be another opportunity to present video game history to a wide audience, in a setting where retrogaming, public engagement and preservation will play a prominent role.

Retro heritage

MUVIC will bring its museum perspective to explain the historical and cultural value of original systems.

A major meeting point

SAGA Barcelona Game Fest will bring together creators, professionals, enthusiasts, families and video game communities.
